Introducing Renata De Luca, aka Tahani Al-Jamil (The Good Place)

Previous Name: Tahani Al-Jamil
Myth: The Good Place
Past Life Information: Tahani was a socialite from a fucked-up family, which sort of took the fun out of all the glamour. Who cares if you count Taylor Swift and Beyonce as two of your friends when your parents ran your entire life as a competition between yourself and your sister for their love -- and you always lost? Tahani was always ragingly jealous of her sister and deeply committed to superficiality. When she died, she was sent to the Bad Place, and chosen as part of the demon Michael's experiment to have humans torture each other (rather than traditional torture). However, through a series of twists and turns, the four experimental souls became aware of their deaths, found an unlikely ally in a demon and an all-knowing being, and, miraculously, influences each other to become better. Tahani has grappled with the meaning of her wealth, her feelings for fellow soul squad member Jason, and finding real friendships with real people. Also, she almost married a Hemsworth once, which was... both before and after she died. Don't worry about it. Time means nothing. Jeremy Bearimy, baby.

Current Name: Renata De Luca
Age: 29
Occupation: General Manager of various De Luca holdings and properties (a small portion)
Personality: Renata thinks appearances matter very much -- but of course she does, she's been raised to believe so. She completed her MBA because business, success, power... these are the things she knows. These are her birthright. She's studious and deeply, deeply conflict-averse. She can't stand letting anyone down (will make herself a doormat) and she can't stand to watch people disappoint other people (she will not know what to do with them -- she can't deal with disappointing people herself). If you don't really know her, she'll seem polished and together and enviable. Her instagram is a dream life; she actually is a medium-time influencer. But she has no idea who she really is, beyond being her parents' child -- the only one that has consistently lived up to their legacy. Now that she know they were criminals and fraudsters, she feels completely adrift. But she also feels like maybe she should try to mitigate the damage being done to their brand? She's in over her head and needs help.

Background: The De Lucas were notorious in NOLA for their ruthless property ownership and development. Their name drips with elitism and exclusivity. They were a wealthy family, a showy family, a troubled family. Parental expectations drove Renata's older brother Mateo to great success and then, she guesses, to ruin. And Renata's twin sister had less tolerance for all the strain; after Renata was punished by her parents for a less than perfect grade, her sister stole money from them and was disowned. Renata loves her twin, and loves her brother, but she hates that they shattered her fiction of a good family. She's not close to them, but she's of course forever bonded to her twin -- they either love each other ferociously or have no time for each other whatsoever. So Renata works and works to make her life look perfect and take her parents' place in the world, inherit their legacy maybe, but she also knows that they're not kind, that they've hurt her and her siblings. She feels trapped, really, but also like maybe she wants to be trapped. Now, though, her parents' massive fraudulent and criminal acts have been discovered, and they have fled the country. Renata knows she needs to pick up the pieces, and she doesn't know how to do that -- or what to do next. She's never felt so alone and so unsure in her life. Even though Mateo, who always wanted to protect her, is finally coming home.

Current Status: Unaware

comments
